Get your child on the right path in life for just £49.99

Never has a generation of children suffered more from mental ill health (1 in 10) and childhood obesity.  But it doesn’t have to be this way.
You may have already heard about the benefits yoga can bring to support a child’s physical and emotional development.  Children who are not as enthusiastic about competitive sport or who need additional learning support are especially encouraged.

We want to help you use yoga to get your child more activeWe are keen to help  tackle issues affecting many children in the UK; lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem and bullying.

Yoga embeds in children, an understanding of the benefits of regular exercise and a healthy diet.  Classes deliver a valuable life skill in a fun and creative way bringing learning alive so that each and every child can take part and feel the benefit.

We teach YogaBugs to children from aged 2 ½ to 7 and Yoga’d Up for 8-12 year olds. Classes start on the 9th January, they last for six weeks at a cost of £49.99 and you can find out more and see the schedule here:  http://www.yogasquare.co.uk/yoga-courses-london/

Every Child Matters is a programme of change for children and young people and is the government’s vision for enhancement of the way in which professionals work together to provide children’s care.   The programme places better outcomes for children firmly at the centre of all policies and approaches involving children’s services. These outcomes are:

Be healthy to ensure that children and young people are physically healthy, mentally and emotionally healthy, sexually healthy, living healthy lifestyles and not choosing to take illegal substances. Through yoga classes children are taught physical posture work to maintain strength, flexibility and stamina, whilst relaxation and visualisation techniques help to increase self-confidence and reduce anxiety.

Stay safe from maltreatment, neglect, violence and sexual exploitation. That they are safe from accidental injury and death, safe from bullying and discrimination, crime and anti social behaviour in and out of school and that they have security and stability and are cared for. Classes highlight how to deal with challenging issues through breathing, posture work and relaxation techniques.

Enjoy and achieve through learning through being ready for school, attending and enjoying school, that they stretch national educational standards at primary school and that they achieve personal and social development and enjoy recreation. Yoga is for everyone and everyone can enjoy it and realise their potential.

Yoga helps children to connect with their intuitive nature which in turn helps boost their self confidence and can help them to develop into more grounded individuals.

Whilst it may be difficult to see how yoga helps economic wellbeing, it is true to say that if a child feels confident and happy, they are less likely to crave the security that material goods give them to help them keep up with their peer group.  Yoga also helps reduce the likelihood of kids becoming bullies by improving their self-esteem.

The programme demands that all organisations that provide services to children work together in more integrated and effective ways. Both YogaBugs and Yoga’d Up course materials are designed to uphold these values with a vision of laying healthy foundations for children’s lives ahead.

Christmas shopping stress reliever with Yoga Square

Christmas shopping can strain your shoulders as well as your purse but don’t worry, yoga can help.

With all the stress and excitement of organising Christmas, especially if you have a family, it’s easy to forget about the wear and tear on your body. But there’s no real need to just grin and bear it.  At Yoga Square, we place an emphasis on the health of the spine with a chiropractic spin on our approach.  The straighten up exercise and diagram below are used internationally to ensure that tension is alleviated and your spine is correctly realigned.  Ideally, it’s best to do this a couple of times a day.  So before you get down to that gift wrapping, why not stop for a moment and follow these instructions which will help lift that shoulder strain away – a perfect stress reliever.

If you’re interested in teaching yoga, our yoga courses in London will be starting very soon and we’re giving you an astonishing £600 off for the next two weeks.

Happy holidays!

Appeasing your appetite before a Yoga class

At Yoga Square, we know how tough it can be to manage your hunger between leaving work and making it to a class.  Or if you are on one of our intensive courses and have a gap between classes, managing your appetite can be a bit of a task.  So we thought we’d share some of these classics with you to help put a stop to the rumbling in your tummy.

Apples

One large apple can provide you about 5g fiber, which fills your stomach for a longer amount of time. The sugars in apples also don’t influence blood sugar levels very much, which means you’ll have less risk of having your blood sugar level greatly increase and then dramatically crash.

Peppermint Tea
Peppermint tea, made from the leaves of the peppermint plant, is often used for its medicinal qualities to alleviate ailments such as digestive concerns, pain and anxiety. Peppermint tea also might help suppress your appetite to aid in weight loss, although the scent of the peppermint, rather than the consumption of the tea, seems to cause the effect.
Scent travels from the nose to the brain, and can affect the part of the hypothalamus that registers satiety; your brain then releases hormones that suppress your appetite. A 2009 article in “The New York Times” explains that peppermint is one scent that might have this effect. Your sense of smell greatly affects taste, so scent might cause you to eat less. However, more research is needed to confirm the potential link between peppermint scent and appetite suppression.
Flaxseeds
According to AskMen.com, eating flaxseeds is becoming a popular way to consume essential fatty acids you need and to gain a good dosage of soluble fiber in your diet. Soluble fiber is a type of fiber that can help reduce blood cholesterol levels. Soluble fiber also slows the digestion process, which helps suppress appetite.

Caffeine

Caffeine is mostly known for its energizing effects. According to AskMen.com, however, when taken in moderate doses, caffeine also stimulates the central nervous system, which suppresses appetite.

Water

Drinking water is an easy way to decrease appetite. According to ProgressiveHealth.com, if you drink an 8 oz. glass of water when you begin to feel hungry, you should notice that your appetite becomes suppressed.

Hoodia

Hoodia is a supplement that regulates your blood glucose levels. It boosts your energy levels, increases the metabolic rate of your body and is effective for weight loss.

Soup

Chicken soup can fill you up quickly due to the protein in chicken. Vegetable soup also reduces your appetite by filling you up with vegetables. Hot liquids in general help suppress your appetite, which makes soup a good way to decrease appetite.

Wasabi

Eating spicy food helps suppress appetite. Adding wasabi to your sushi or fish can thus help you feel less hungry.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal has a higher amount of dietary fiber than most cereals and is low in sugar, which enables it to fill you up without causing your blood sugar level to crash.

Salmon

Salmon helps suppress your appetite because of the healthy fat in it. Protein is the most satiating nutrient, but fat is what helps you feel full for hours after you eat. Salmon contains protein and fat, which makes it an excellent appetite suppressant.

Almonds

Almonds are another excellent source of healthy fats. It takes about half an hour to feel the hunger-reducing effects of nuts, so eat almonds before you start to feel extremely hungry in order to effectively suppress your appetite.

Boys Want Yoga

Learn to teach and fill a gap in the market: Boys Want Yoga!

As Paul Kendall points out in his article in the Telegraph, the demand for yoga amongst the male of the species is growing but is the supply?

“In New York, the yoga capital of the Western world, the studio is fast replacing the private members’ club, or golf club, as the place to be seen or steal “face time” with people who you want to impress or give you a job. It’s not unheard of for hedge funders to hear a rival has been spotted doing a Downward Dog and immediately sign up for lessons, for fear they might be losing some sort of advantage.”

Clearly this presents an opportunity for anyone with any entrepreneurial savvy.  At the moment, yoga is branded and marketed as a predominantly female pursuit.  The many males who might have considered yoga as a sporting activity could well be put off by the plethora of pink in many yoga websites and the ‘hippy-bohemian’ look some studios employ.  Additionally, a lack of male teachers reinforces this image.  So we are calling all the boys out there to come, train to teach.

The demand for yoga amongst men is growing so why not jump on the wave and capitalise on one of the few things that is taking an upturn in this downward turned economic market!
